(Performed in this clip by Penina o Tiafau.) This is a vi’i, or song of praise, for the Upolu village of Lauli’i.

O laulii o si o’u nuu moni

ae nofo a’u i laulii mo a’u mafaufauga
ae ou te lei faagaloina o la’u pele tasi mai tutuila

Tali: le masina ua vaaia i luga o mauga
ae nofo a’u i laulii mo o’u mafaufauga
ou te lei faagaloina o la’u pele tasi mai tutuila

written by Malia and Alapati, co-written by Taotofi Tuipala of Tafananai, submitted by Maosi; side note: this song was rewritten also as a vi’i for Nu’uuli also although it makes no sense when there is no moli o le ava in Nu’uuli

Most of the lyrics on this site were submitted by fans of Samoan music, so the words might not be entirely correct… and we may not know who originally composed the song.

Please help us to learn.

Please share any corrections or knowledge about this song in a comment below. Whatever we can verify, we will update in this post.

Ma le fa’aaloalo lava.

AFEGA REPRESENT ! LOVE PENINA O TIAFAU

Lila Pele

This song is about the Lauli’i village in Tutuila American Samoa. It was not written by Malia and Alapati. The lyrics were written by Konelio Pele while in the Vietnam war. When he came came home, it was then a calibration with Alapati and Malia. Gave them the song to sing with a request to credit him for it. He did not want any money. He just wanted credit. He never got credit for it.

I wish I got to meet him. R.I.P. Grandpa

We were told growing up that Konelio wrote this song. My aunty Shirley Vaimaona was also given the blessing by Konelio to sing the song, so the Aiga Band wrote a song called Lauli’i Tua. The 2nd verse and chorus is from Vi’i o Lauli’i. Thank you Lila Pele for the clarification. Konelio deserves all the credit!
